Margaret Ann Bulkley was an Irish- British surgeon who lived in the 19th century. She was born in 1811 in Cork, Ireland and was raised as a girl until she decided to dress and live as a man under the name James Barry in order to attend medical school at the University of Edinburgh. She later attended the Westminster Hospital Medical School in London and became a surgeon. She served as a military doctor in South Africa, Mauritius, Trinidad, and other places around the world, improving sanitation and medical care in the military. She performed one of the first successful caesarean sections in Africa and pioneered new treatments for diseases such as leprosy. Her true identity was only discovered after her death.
